For many subsistence farmers living in the Busia and Kakamega Districts of Western Kenya, pigs are a vital source of income and an important means of improving one’s quality of life. With its partners, VWB/VSF-Canada members and students are training local veterinary and public health officers, and nurses about pig production, management, reproductive productivity in an effort to improve capacity and prevent the transmission of Taenia solium (a parasite that cycles between pigs and people that can cause epilepsy and other debilitating conditions in people).
